Trust and Obey

November 8, 2024

As people who identify with Jesus as their Lord and Savior, we face many uncertainties, but none should cause us to abandon our trust and obedience to the Lord.

This sentiment brings the hymn “Trust and Obey” by John H. Sammis to mind:

When we walk with the Lord
in the light of His word,
what a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

(If you have a moment, you can listen to the full hymn here.)

As we confront daily struggles, trusting and obeying the Lord is what we’re called to do. Trusting and obeying are closely connected principles that enrich our relationship with God.

In John 14:15, Jesus states, “if you love me, keep my commands.”

The invitation to obedience arises from our love for Him, recognizing the truth in Isaiah 55:8-9:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

It is an amazing experience when we trust God—when we place our faith in His character and promises. Proverbs 3:5- 6 encourages us:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways, acknowledge Him,
and He will make your paths straight.

Living this way is an intentional decision to follow Jesus even when we don’t fully comprehend His plan and purpose. It is an act of trusting and obeying God.

I recognize that trusting and obeying God is an act of surrender, and for some, it can be overwhelming due to the need for control or the discomfort of stepping out of our comfort zone.  Let’s remember the words of Deuteronomy 5:33:

You shall walk entirely in the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live, and that it may be well for you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess.

Imagine the freedom and fruit of trusting and walking in obedience with the Lord.

Friends, not a single one of us knows what tomorrow holds, but we can hold on to the promise of Romans 8:28:

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

Our obedience reflects our trust, strengthens our faith, and empowers us to move forward—even when the way ahead is unclear.

Today, let’s choose to trust and obey, confident that our loving Father is guiding us toward His perfect will, ensuring that our lives shine with His glory.
